Boiling Crab- Brookhurst

Yesterday I went to The Boiling Crab on Brookhurst and Westminster with Linda, Lauren, Sam and AK.  O-M-G!!!  I didn't think the wait would be more than 1 ish hour but it was 2.5 hrs long.  I was running a bit late and didn't get there until 6:20pm.  Linda got there first and put her name down and I was SHOCKED at the wait time.  I was thinking to myself:  Should we stay or go and if we go, where else could we eat?  Lauren wasn't even out of work yet and AK was still on her way....  After much thought, Sam, Linda and I decided to stick it out.

Fast forward two point five hours later, Linda had to leave.  She had to go home for a prior engagement.  Shortly afterwards, we were seated and proceeded to order.  We ordered the sweet potato fries and fried calamari to share.  AK ordered jamabalya w/o rice because it was chilly from all of the waiting outside.  Sam had the oysters since she doesn't like crawfish.  Thankfully she had Cuon while we were waiting.  :)

Sweet Potato Fries

Oysters

The main course as always is the crawfish.  Thankfully it was fresh not frozen.  AK and I shared two lbs. of the medium hot of the whole shebang while Lauren had 2 lbs. of the mild.

Mild "The Whole She-Bang"

Was it worth the wait?  I think it was a matter of principle.  LOL  We had waited so long that didn't want to leave.  Sam said she is going to take John to the BC in Chino Hill just to see if it's as busy as the one as on Brookhurst.  Maybe we went on a flukey Friday and because it was spring break but I'm glad I went.  The reason is I got to spend time with friends and that is time well spent.  :)

Royal Capital Seafood Restaurant--> Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian Anyone?

After another fruitless house hunting search, I decided to take my parents out to lunch at the Royal Capital Seafood Restaurant in Garden Grove. It is a mesh between Vietnamese, Chinese and Cambodian style of food.

This is our typical lunch menu.  It can't be beat.  You get a soup and the che which is the tapioca mung bean dessert, it was a bargain.

85. Hot and Sour Fish

101. Beef Chow Fun (PanFry)

When we order, we always get the Hot and Sour Fish. I think it's a misnomer because it's neither Hot or Sour. We put the sauces on the side to preserve the crunchy batter of the whole fish. The fish is thin and the batter was light and airy but not too oily. Think of it like the British Fish and Chips. It came out very quickly and steamy hot. The sauces can be spooned on to taste and eaten with rice.

Second course is the Beef Chow Fun (Pan Fry). I haven't had it this way since I was in SF. It was perfect. The smokiness and the dry flavor is not something that you can be duplicated at home. I guess it's because you need that temperature, a large surface area of a wok and oil and expertise that I have yet to master. I doubt the beef is of high quality but I think they must use cornstarch and flour to help tenderize it because it was better than many of those fancier and more upscale places that I've been to over the past few weeks.

Since tomorrow is no meat Friday, I decided to get order Sweet and Sour Shrimp to go.

57. Sweet and Sour Shrimp

The ubiquitous or ever present red sauce makes its presence known here in the sweet and sour shrimp.  I was disappoint this time around because not as many shrimp.  Maybe it's because it's a weekday?  I guess I can't be picky because after all it's a lunch special.

Mo's Smoked Gouda Dip

Welcome to my new blog peeps!

I've decided to have a separate blog devoted to on food and other things and leave my old blog for my books. After my less than stellar dinner at Nirvana Grille (review at notenoughtime2read.blogspot.com), we went to WF and I was disheartened to discover that they didn't have Mo's Smoked Gouda Dip at the Laguna Beach store. It was much smaller and going under remodeling so it was very unappealing to me. So I was determined to get some and made a special trip to go today. I love the HB store. I could just walk in their for hrs and I have.

Whole Foods has this Smoked Gouda Dip that is totally awesome. It's in their cheese section in the back of their store and apparently they have the hot and mild flavors. It's grated Gouda cheese, jalepeno and habenero peppers, cream cheese and mayo in it. Still suffering the dregs of sleep, I was getting coffee and the guy giving me my coffee said that one of the employees from the El Segundo store named Mo created the Dip and that the HB store is the second store to feature the Dip, hence the name Mo's Smoked Gouda Dip. Apparently only two stores have it: El Segundo and HB.

Anyways, before I left the store, I did find Jeanette's Inko's White Peach tea on sale for $1.19 and what could be AK Reed's Extra Ginger Brew on sale for $3.99 for a 4 pack. I bought them to try.
